Buoncristiani Proprietary Red OPC 2014
We first met Nate Buoncristiani in 2014 when he visited us at the Bottle Shop to taste through his family's small batch Napa wines. Buoncristiani is the result of the passion of four brothers - Matt, Jay, Aaron and Nate - who were born and raised in the Napa Valley from a long lineage of Italian winemakers and wine lovers. The brothers take great pride in performing all aspects of enology, viticulture, wine production, and art design in order to share a true expression of their winemaking passion. The motto is quality not quantity and they craft their wines without compromise. Nate's brother Jay is the winemaker, who worked at Hess Vineyards before the brothers set up Buoncristiani in their parents' garage at their home in Napa.
We tasted through the Buoncristiani family's wines back in 2014 including the O.P.C. proprietary red blend, which was 2009 at the time. Now we are super excited to offer the 2014 vintage, a gorgeous wine with 95 points from Parker. In a quest to create a wine uniquely their own, the brothers discovered the synergy of marrying Napa Cabernet Sauvignon with Syrah, while also folding in further complexity of texture and flavor with Napa Malbec and Merlot blenders. Grapes are sourced from some of Napa’s most prestigious vineyards including Hyde, Stagecoach, Hossfeld and Bennett. Just like their wine making fathers before them, with “Ol’ Pa’s Cuvée” they continue the family tradition of handcrafting blends. And in fact, the brothers love Syrah and Malbec. Nate said that Syrah is the 'Queen' to Cabernet as 'King'. The O.P.C. has about 30% of each, along with Merlot and Malbec, and we have been seeing more and more blends coming out of Napa. Remember, Syrah is one of the original 'black grapes' that Californians blended for years with Petite Sirah, Zinfandel and more in big field vineyards.
Wine AdvocateThe 2014 Proprietary Red O.P.C. is a blend of 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Syrah, 20% Malbec and 12% Merlot. A brilliant nose of blue, red and black fruits, licorice, graphite, background spice and roasted meats jumps from the glass of this complex proprietary red. This is an intriguing blend that Buoncristiani has pulled off flawlessly. The color is a dense ruby/purple, the wine full-bodied and rich with sweet tannin, a burgeoning, broad suppleness and a rich, long, lusty finish. Drink it over the next 10-12 years.
