Domaine Mongeard Mugneret Vosne-Romanée 2016
This gorgeous Vosne-Romanée is made from 35-60 year old vines from a family living and working in this famous village of Burgundy since the 18th century. Records even show a Mongeard working as vigneron for the illustrious Domaine de la Romanée-Conti in 1786. In 1945, Jean Mongeard, whose mother was a Mugneret, found himself making wine at the age of 16. His father had died five years before, and there was no one left to do the job. The entire 1945 crop was purchased by Baron le Roy, Marquis d'Angerville and Henri Gouges. Gouges instructed the young Mongeard to personally bottle the wines, rather than sell in barrel, because of the exceptional quality of the family's wines. Robert Parker describes the wines: 'The style of winemaking seems to extract rich, supple, concentrated fruit from the grapes...The wines always seem to show well young, but also age nicely for 10-15 years.' This Vosne-Romanée is made from 100% de-stemmed grapes and is ultimately aged in 35% new oak.

BurghoundReduction and wood toast dominate the nose at present. By contrast there is excellent richness to the full-bodied and suave medium-bodied flavors that tighten up quickly on the balanced, complex and impressively persistent finish. This appears to be the best wine in 2015 range among the Mongeard villages cuvées. 89-91
