Bella Union Cabernet Sauvignon 2014
Bella Union specializes in the art of blending Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. It was founded in 2012 by the partners of Far Niente and Nickel & Nickel, who, for more than 30 years, have been growing, making and enjoying Napa Valley Cabernet. The winery is located on a 25-acre Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard along Bella Oaks Lane, a storied Cabernet growing area in the heart of Rutherford. The name, Bella Union, is a nod to the history of Bella Oaks Lane, which was known as the Bella Union Roadway in the 1880s. At that time, the country lane led into the Mayacamas Mountains and eventually to the Bella Union Mining Company. Creating a truly beautiful and harmonious union of vineyards across the Napa Valley requires an artful blend of carefully selected sites and traditional varietals complementary to Cabernet Sauvignon. It is in this spirit that the Bella Union winery was born.
The 2014 growing season was characterized by consistently warm weather. A dry winter led to ideal conditions for bloom and set, yielding a healthy spring crop. The mild weather persisted into the summer, with a brief heat spell in June. Veraison started in mid-July, and the moderate summer heat provided perfect conditions for optimal ripening. Flavors were fully developed thanks to a heat spell in mid-September, and we began harvest. We brought in the last of our beautifully ripe fruit by the second week of October. The 2014 is made of 98% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Malbec.
Wine EnthusiastFrom a 25-acre site on the western flank of Rutherford, this wine includes 2% Malbec. With sanguine cassis, cranberry and cinnamon touches, it's a soft, round and velvety expression of the hearty variety, finishing with notes of coffee and dark chocolate.
