The village of Gevrey-Chambertin is located in the Northern part of Côte de Nuits. The soil is chalky, with a good covering layer of clayey marl which gives the wines their strength and roundness. Lying on a gentle slope, the vineyards are planted between 240 and 280 meters above sea level (720 to 840 feet) for the Joseph Drouhin offering. By law, a Gevrey-Chambertin may only be a red wine made of 100% Pinot Noir, and classic food pairings would be Burgundy's famous dishes : beef bourguignon and coq au vin, and will also pair beautifully with grilled meats and fine French cheeses.

Look for aromas of black cherry, blackberry, subtle wood and licorice followed by more of the same in the mouth along with gentle spice, nutmeg and leather. The tannins are fresh and silky at first, becoming more velvety as the wine opens up. This is a classic Gevrey.

A serious wine for this appellation with excellent red and black fruit that is beautifully underlined by the full, healthy tannins on the medium-to full-bodied palate. Very satisfying, long finish with quite some complexity. Drink or hold.

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Village contains Premier Cru fruit and is quite deep in color. It has a ripe, focused bouquet of dark plum and black currant aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with a fine bead of acidity, mainly red fruit and a refreshing, spicy finish, quite saline on the aftertaste.

Captivating aromas and flavors of pure cherry, mineral, tobacco and spice mark this supple red. Beautifully balanced, this remains long on the finish, driven by succulent acidity. Best from 2020 through 2033.—B.S.

Drouhin's 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Village bursts with aromas of cherries, cassis, sweet soil tones, grilled meats and orange rind. Medium to full-bodied, lively and layered, it's concentrated but elegant, with refined, powdery tannins and a sapid finish. 89-91

A less spicy and more sauvage-inflected nose reflects additional notes of red and black cherry, plum, rose petal and plenty of earth characters. The attractively textured, intense and solidly powerful medium weight flavors exude a subtle minerality on the ever-so-mildly rustic and austere finale. This too is a fine villages and in particular it has unusually good persistence.
