Château-Lafon-Rochet Les Pélérins de Lafon-Rochet 2009
Les Pélérins, meaning the Pilgrims, is the second wine of Lafon Rochet, created from the younger vines of the estate. It can be described as approachable wine, a sort of initiation before the estate's grand vin, and it can be drunk at a younger age while you wait for the first label to age. Fresh, charming and simple, yet it benefits from the same treatment as its eldest sibling. The 2009 is a terrific introduction to this wine, which is ripe on the nose with a wonderful finesse in the mouth. Full, long tannins coat the palate. This wine is typical of St. Estephe with excellent length and complexity.
Classified as a fourth growth in 1855, Lafon Rochet consists of a 100 acre vineyard planted to 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc in Bordeaux's northern area of Saint Estephe. Superbly located adjacent to both Lafite Rothschild and Cos d'Estournel, the well-priced Lafon Rochet is producing wines of significant character and aging capability.
Wine SpectatorStylish lilac, damson plum and cherry pit notes run through this medium-weight, forward-styled offering, with a chalk edge that keeps the wine grounded in the appellation.
