Acre Merlot 2012
ACRE produces classic Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Zinfandel exclusively from organically farmed vineyards (for over 20 years) within the AVA’s of Oakville and Yountville. ACRE wines enhance the fine dining experience with their distinctive fruit characteristics, structure and complexity. The 2012 ACRE Merlot is a great vintage of this wine. From the moment you pour it into your glass it compels you with its aroma, which is a complex interplay of both fruity and earthy elements. The flavor is equally fascinating with impressions of plum and black cherry, interwoven with earthy and spicy notes with hints of mocha, cinnamon and anise. The tannins are bold, but not astringent, rather they are textural providing substance and expression across the palate. This complexity and structure demonstrate what a satisfying wine Merlot is when grown in the ideal soil and climate. Completely dry with lively acidity this Acre Merlot just calls out for a sizzling lamb chop, a grilled steak or roasted duck or other poultry.
The ACRE story begins in 2002 with just one acre of Cabernet Sauvignon planted and nurtured to maturity almost solely by ACRE winemaker and co-founder David Becker at his family home in the Oak Knoll region of Napa Valley. Dave’s one acre “Home” vineyard soon led to production from two more similar sized plantings. The first was his next door neighbor Ann Kraemer’s head trained, Zinfandel vineyard. Ann planted her vineyard about the same time as Dave’s home vineyard with three clones of Zinfandel made famous by Ridge Vineyards. Then, in 2011 Dave planted identical Bordeaux clones from his home vineyard to a one acre site in Yountville just north of Stags Leap, allowing an interesting vineyard comparison with identical varietal, clones, spacing and orientation and location the only variable.
