Bodegas Atalaya La Atalaya del Camino 2016
We're sorry, but this product is not currently available.
Made by the Juan Gil family who also make the famous Clio red in Jumilla, Bodegas Atalaya 'La Atalaya' is an old vine red made from 65 year vines with Garnacha, Monastrell and Alicante Bouschet. The yields are incredibly low, with only 2 ½ tons per acre. Big, dense, chewy and smooth, this delicious bargain red has black fruit, olive and mocha notes in the nose and mouth. Founded in 1916, Juan Gil is celebrating their 100th anniversary, and continues to show the world how great, authentic wines are made with love, passion and pride!!!
Serve with pasta, (noodles, spaghetti, macaroni), vegetables, mushrooms, stewed meat, sausage, pork, roasted meat, red and/or white meat with sauces, grilled meat, soft or medium cheeses.
VinousOpaque ruby. Sexy, spice-accented dark berries and pungent flowers on the deeply perfumed nose. Offers appealingly sweet black and blue fruit flavors that become livelier and pick up a hint of spicecake with air. Woodsmoke and mocha qualities come up on the impressively long, penetrating finish, which features supple tannins and a strong echo of sappy blue fruit. (aged for a year in new and used French oak barrels)
Wine AdvocateThe 2016 La Atalaya del Camino is a blend of Garnacha Tintorera with some 15% Monastrell from dry-farmed, head-pruned vines planted on limestone soils and averaging 45 years of age. It fermented in stainless steel and matured in French barrique for 12 months. It has a mixture of berry fruit and spicy aromas, a little less expressive than the 2015 I tasted last time. It has some dusty tannins and dark berry flavors. It needs powerful food.
Wine SpectatorThis inky red is rich and bold. Kirsch, blackberry and cassis flavors mingle with cocoa, licorice and tar notes, elbowing chewy tannins and balsamic acidity. Heady. Garnacha Tintorera and Monastrell. Drink now through 2024.
