John Buehler founded Buehler Vineyards in 1971. Located six miles east of St. Helena and nestled in the mountains above Conn Valley, the estate has about 300 acres of Napa Valley hillside terrain focused on Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel, the two grapes considered best for the soil and climate in this part of Napa. The 2013 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9% Merlot, pro a wine that displays a broad spectrum of aromas, flavors, and textures that Cabernet can show in the Napa Valley tempered by the silky, calming influence of Merlot to the structured core.

The 2013 vintage will be fondly remembered for its classic proportions and near perfect ripening season that began with ideal flowering and fruit set and then was coaxed to ripeness by a steady stream of moderate sun drenched days and cool foggy nights.  Following a seven-day fermentation, the wine was transferred to barrels before initiating the malolactic fermentation The 2013 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon was racked four times in the first year of aging to encourage aromatic and tannin development. It was aged a total of 18 months in a blend of French and American oak barrels.

The wine is brimming with fruit aromas and flavors biased to the black fruit end of the Cabernet spectrum: plums, blackberry, and black currant. Rich and full-bodied on the palate, this Cabernet drinks well on release but will soften and develop with additional age. For those who seek youthful fresh Cabernet fruit aromas and a more structured wine, drink it from 2015 through 2019. If you prefer the less fruity, more developed bottle bouquet aromas and a softer, more velvety wine on the palate, drink it from 2020-2030.

Wine EnthusiastThis is an impressive effort, especially at the price, which is kind of unheard of in these parts. Softened by 9% Merlot, it's rich and full-bodied without ever overdoing it, opaque in color with a nose of baked bread and flavors of raspberry and black currant. It's food-ready.

Wine AdvocateOne of the great values in Napa Cabernet Sauvignon year-in, year-out is Buehler Vineyards. The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is dense ruby/purple with loads of cassis and spice box. The wine is beautifully pure, luscious, round, juicy and sexy. Drink it over the next 5-7 years, although I suspect it will keep longer. Wines like this are few and far between -- sadly -- in Napa Valley.

Wine SpectatorA solid if rustic effort, with extracted, ragged tannins more prominent than the core dark berry fruit notes. Ends with dusty earth and savory herb flavors. Drink now. 15,000 cases made.
