Nozzole Chianti Classico Riserva 2016
Located north of the village of Greve in the heart of the Chianti Classico region, the Nozzole estate covers a striking, rugged, mountainous area of about 1,000 acres at 300 meters in elevation. In order to obtain concentration and complexity in the wine, yields are kept low. The grapes are hand harvested, destemmed and crushed. Fermentation is initiated on the skins in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, followed by a maceration period to draw out color and tannins. The wine is racked into stainless steel tanks for malolactic fermentation before aging in oak for 16 months and 3 months in bottle before release. The wine is bottled on the estate.

This wine feels like it has been made with an eye toward international markets, thanks to those soft lines, oak renderings and its richly concentrated fruit. There are plump notes of ripe cherry, blackberry, tobacco and baking spice. Pair this wine with your favorite steak dinner. With 80,000 bottles made, this wine is easy to find and offers great value too.
Wine SpectatorHigh-toned aromas of violet and black cherry are accented by vanilla in this rich red. Assertive tannins gird the finish as the acidity keeps the bright fruit flavors focused and long. Steely yet ripe, this finds good equilibrium in the end. Best from 2022 through 2033. 16,000 cases imported.
VinousBlack cherry, chocolate, leather, licorice, smoke and new oak infuse the 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva Villa Nozzole with notable depth. Pliant and supple, with plenty of forward fruit and bright aromatic top notes, the 2016 has plenty to offer. I would prefer to drink it over the next handful of years, give or take. This is nicely done.
