Paolo Scavino Barolo 2021
Enrico Scavino is at the helm of this family estate, founded in 1921, and has proven himself a leader in the quality of both his own vineyard and in the Barolo area at large. Considered the 'avant-garde' of the Langhe area, he continues to vinify his wines parcel by parcel, taking advantage of these small fermentations to try to make better wines. In fact, in 2007 Enrico has even designed and fabricated his own fermentation vessel, used exclusively on his Barolo, to improve the finesse of extraction from his nebbiolo. Now with his daughters Elisa and Enrica working with him full-time, it would seem possible for this statesman—contemporary of Domenico Clerico and Elio Altare—to take a step back. Instead, Enrico’s passion is further bolstered by the presence of the next generation.

This review is from Kerin O'Keefe formally of Wine Enthusiast: “Absolutely gorgeous, the 2019 Barolo from Paolo Scavino stuns with its fragrance of perfumed berry, dark spice, Alpine herb and dog rose. One of best entry level Barolos from the vintage, it’s focused, vibrant and savory, delivering crushed mint, star anise, cranberry, red cherry and blood orange. Elegant and taut, it boasts polished tannins while bright acidity imparts vibrancy and tension. Drink 2027–2039.”

To be released in January 2025, the Paolo Scavino 2021 Barolo is bright and vivid, showing the focus and character of the vintage. This sample is still quite tight, and the tannins are firmly knit. However, the tannins are more elegant and silkier in the 2021 compared to 2020. I recommend giving this wine more time in bottle to allow it to fully flesh out.

Restrained and compact nose with vibrant violets and dried cherries, refreshed by pomegranate and oak bark. Full-bodied on the palate with a sold backbone of tannins that turn dusty and drier on the finish. Crisp acidity and an austere aftertaste. Try from 2027.

Lacy and elegant, yet with ample tannins for structure, featuring rose, strawberry, cherry and mineral aromas and flavors. Pure and focused, this red stays in the red fruit spectrum through the long finish. Shows excellent balance in its youthful way. Best from 2028 through 2045. 3,000 cases made, 1,000 cases imported.

The 2021 Barolo pours a bright red hue and offers a floral perfume of fresh roses, tarragon, ripe cherries, and cedar. It's compact and medium-bodied, with a refined feel, snappy acidity, mouthwatering salinity, and well-defined tannins. It offers a more nervous and structured energy at this early tasting and will only benefit from another 6-12 months in bottle. Overall, it feels more precise in this vintage and worth having several bottles to check in on. Drink 2025-2040.
