Vérité La Muse 2013
The name Vérité, French for truth, stands for wines that reflect their soil with integrity. This is the mission of Jess Jackson at Vérité, part of Jackson Family Wines. His winemaker Pierre Seillan first began working with Cabernet Franc and Merlot more than four decades ago at his family's estate in Armagnac, and then later moved on to Château de Targé in the Saumur-Champigny AOC of the Loire Valley. Though Pierre enjoyed the Loire, Bordeaux beckoned, and he spent two decades as technical director and winemaker for seven Bordeaux châteaux in Lalande de Pomerol, Saint-Émilion, St. Estèphe, Haut-Médoc, Premières Côtes de Bordeaux and Bordeaux Supérieur.
Pierre met Jess Jackson in the mid-1990s and soon accepted his invitation to come to Sonoma County to make world-class wine. Inspired by the region's exceptional terroir, Pierre crafts Vérité’s wines as pure Sonoma expressions of traditional Bordeaux varieties. Vérité seeks, through wine, to give voice to the truth of the soil. Working with a palette of more than 40 different Sonoma County soil types in the region's beautifully diverse micro-crus, the folks at Vérité have a deeply personal relationship with all aspects of winegrowing and winemaking through an intimate understanding of the details of each micro-cru: the personality of the vines, the character of the block, and the nuances of each bud and tendril.
The diversity of Sonoma County is mirrored in the Vérité estate vineyards, where soils, aspects, and microclimates in mountain and hillside vineyards vary dramatically from block to block, creating what they like to think of as small vineyards within vineyards, our palette of soil types. Each is distinct from the others, so they call these special places micro-crus. They are the heart and soul of the terroir philosophy at Vérité. The truth is in our soil; it flows through the vines and speaks clearly in the wines.
With supple fruit and spice, exceptional balance and impressive length, Vérité La Muse is crafted primarily from Merlot. From its inception, every vintage of this special wine – which honors the style of the great wines of Pomerol while celebrating the quality of our world-class fruit grown in Sonoma County — has received outstanding critical acclaim. This wine has received 100 points from Robert
Wine AdvocateThe 2013 La Muse, like all of the 2013s, comes about one-third from Alexander Valley vineyards, 40-plus percent from Chalk Hill, and the rest Knights Valley and Bennett Valley – all high-elevation hillside vineyards. A blend of 89% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 3% Malbec at 14.3% alcohol, the wine is amazingly like a great vintage of Petrus, with mulberry, black cherry, licorice, truffle and unctuous, thick, juicy fruit all present in this full-bodied masterpiece. The tannins are still present. The wine has purity and savory presence and is remarkable. The finish goes on for well past a minute. This wine would probably benefit from 5-8 years of bottle age and last 40-50 years.
