Consider that they work with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon as well as Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, they produce world-class wines from all of these varietals, and they do it from Knight's Valley and the Sonoma Coast. Of course, they have had some fabulous winemakers pass through, including the likes of Helen Turley and Mark Aubert, Luc Morlet and now his brother, Nicolas Morlet. Nevertheless, much of the credit has to go to Sir Peter Michael, the owner, who gives these people carte blanche, and expects their very best.' Robert M. Parker Jr.

Wine AdvocateMost of the Chardonnay clones used by Peter Michael are the old Wente clones, believed to have come from the grand cru vineyard just north of Beaune called Corton-Charlemagne. Peter Michael uses the Calera clone in their Ma Belle Fille estate vineyard. This has the highest elevation of any of their Chardonnay vineyards, with a southeast and southerly exposure. The 2014 Chardonnay Ma Belle Fille (2,500 cases vs. 1,500 cases of the 2013) shows baked apples, brioche, nectarine and crisp apple skin notes in a meaty, almost tannic style. It is quite reserved and behaves more like a red wine in the glass than your typical Chardonnay. It should age nicely for a decade or more.
