Caparzo was listed by Wine Spectator as one of Brunello di Montalcino's 'Cream of the Crop' producers. The estate is comprised of 475 acres, with 125 total acres planted to vineyards on all 5 sides of the hill of Montalcino, the only estate with this benefit. This gives owner Elizabetta Gnudi Angelini, with her winemaker Massimo Bracalente, access to all of the different terroirs of the appellation, from soil differences to unique microclimates to varying altitudes of vineyards. Serve with roasted meats, hearty pasta dishes, braised meats, rustic lamb courses and/or Italian cheeses and olives.

Caparzo was established towards the end of the 1960’s. The company has grown and adapted with the times all while maintaining and respecting the traditions of the terroir. The rustic and elegant Caparzo villa, La Casa, located at the bottom of Montalcino is available for rent for those who want to fully experience the beauty and tranquillity of the Tuscan countryside.

Ripe, sweet cherry and raspberry fruit are accented by floral, mineral and wild herbs in this alluring red. A backbone of dense, dusty tannins provides support, and the ripe fruit returns on the savory finish. Excellent length. Best from 2023 through 2043.

Plum, ripe-berry and floral aromas with hints of sandalwood and fresh mushrooms. It’s full-bodied with firm, ripe tannins and a fresh, crushed-stone finish. A little timid now. Give it another two or three years. Try after 2023.

Prior to acquiring the Altesino estate, Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini purchased Caparzo in 1998. The property includes 28 hectares designated for Brunello and this estate bottling amalgamates vineyards from four distinct areas with different exposures and soils. The 2016 is charming with a delicate lightness and lively brightness. Violet, rosemary and liquorice aromas lead to cool mint and brambly notes on the palate. Easy flowing and seamless with smooth tannins and a dusty cherry finish.

The 2016 Brunello spent 3 years in a combination of traditional large Slavonian and French oak casks. Fresh with piney herbaceousness, confected black raspberry, and dried violets, it is medium-bodied and easy-drinking with fine tannins with acidity that lifts off the palate. Notes of fresh citrus, dried flowers, and dusty earth are delicate on the palate. This is ready for fresh drinking now or over the next few years.
