Brewer-Clifton's approach to Chardonnay is one which incorporates tradition with precision and restraint. Chardonnay was the first variety that caught their attention from the Sta. Rita Hills. Through Chardonnay the unique oceanic qualities of the region are reflected. Focused on citrus notes and and a saline quality that promotes an ageworthy structure, the uniqueness of a wine region bordered on two of its four sides by the Pacific Ocean is clear. The grapes from each site are handled identically from arrival to the cellar through bottling, allowing for the essence of each site to be expressed.

Another one of the shake-ups in Santa Barbara County in 2015, Brewer Clifton (founded in 1996 by Greg Brewer and Steve Clifton) brought on investor Ken Frederickon, who’s a master sommelier and wholesaler, with the goal to expand their Chardonnay and Pinot Noir programs. I’m not sure exactly what this new partnership will entail, but the winemaking remains firmly in the hands of Greg Brewer and Steve Clifton. Looking at these latest releases, the 2013s are a significant change in style from the 2012s and are much more exuberant, decadent and ripe, with almost overflowing characters. These are not lightweight Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs. I was blown away by their texture and depth.' WINE ADVOCATE

Wine AdvocateIn the same voluptous, blockbuster style as the Acin, the 2013 Chardonnay Hapgood is another knockout Chardonnay from this team. Butter apples, honeysuckle, cream and crushed rock all flow beautifully to a full-bodied, ripe and decadent Chardonnay that has sensational purity and delineation. Seeing only neutral oak, it should knock your socks off over the coming 4-6 years.
