Dennis and Judy Groth are natives of the South Bay Area of California and lived there until 1985, when they moved to Napa Valley. Dennis worked at Hewlett Packard while attending college at San Jose State, and in 1966 began his career as an accountant at Arthur Young & Co. (Now Ernst & Young). He became a CPA in 1968 and a partner of the firm in 1977. In early 1978, he left Ernst & Young to become Chief Financial Officer of Atari, a games and electronics subsidiary of Time Warner. During the years 1978 to 1984, Dennis also served as Executive Vice President, President of the consumer products division, and finally, President of the international division at Atari.

In 1981, the Groths purchased a 121-acre parcel in Oakville. In 1982, they added a second vineyard of 44 acres located south of Yountville. These vineyards, which total 165 acres on the valley floor of Napa, are the primary source of grapes for the Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc wines produced by Groth Vineyards & Winery. Groth Vineyards & Winery was established in 1982, and they crushed the first grapes for their own wines that same year and established a solid reputation as an outstanding producer of Napa Valley wines.

100% of this Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon hails from the Groth family's Oakville Estate.  The 2012 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon shows the intrinsic black stone fruit nuances and the soft tannin structure that define their Oakville, Napa Valley-floor Cabernet. The Reserve Cabernet gets every ounce of special care a winery can devote to its flagship wine.

VinousA dark, mysterious wine, Groth 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve possesses superb depth and delineation. Sweet herbs, cedar, tobacco and leather add nuance on a virile, imposing finish supported by beams of tannin. This big, rich Cabernet is going to require at least a few years in the cellar, but it is impressive, even at this early stage.

James SucklingA balanced and beautiful red with chili, black currants and blackberry character. Full body, round and firm tannins and a long, long finish. A beautiful Groth. Drink or hold.

Wine Enthusiast"Cellar Selection" Sourced from the producer's Reserve Block and blended with 10% Merlot from its Hillview vineyard, this is classic Oakville Cabernet, velvety on the palate and spicy in cinnamon and clove on the nose. Blackberry, dried herb and baked cherry-plum pie all play a part in providing it with richness and complexity. Drink through 2022.

Wine SpectatorThere's lots to admire in this firm, rich Cabernet, with blackberry and blueberry flavors and hints of lead pencil and graphite. The gritty, edgy tannins stand out. Drink now through 2028. 3,500 cases made.
