LaRue Wines Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2013

When Katy Wilson was 18 years old, she made up her mind to become a winemaker. At the time, she was studying Agricultural Business at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo. Katy grew up on a walnut orchard where she learned to drive a tractor before she learned to drive a car. Agricultural Business was a natural choice, but once at Cal Poly she discovered that wine was where she was meant to be. It was in her Agricultural Business 101 class, where she was listening to the professor go on and on about the different careers you can have, when something caught her ear. Wine. An industry that is agriculture and chemistry. It’s a very social industry. As a winemaker, one should be both creative and scientific. It was then that Katy realized there was a job perfectly suited to her.

LaRue Wines is focused on producing high quality Pinot Noir exclusively from top vineyards on the Sonoma Coast. This wine is an elegant expression of the Sonoma Coast region which we tasted and loved at a trade tasting in the Spring of 2016. We invite you to discover this beauty as we did. The 2013 LaRue Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir is a blend from the Rice-Spivak and Emmaline Ann Vineyards. The Rice-Spivak Vineyard is a seven acre vineyard south of the town of Sebastopol. The soils on this vineyard are Goldridge sandy loam along with volcanic ash. The Goldridge is very common for the area, while the volcanic ash is quite unusual. This distinctive soil profile along with the clonal selections of Dijon and Swan create a wine that is balanced with good acidity, fresh aromas, and unmistakable minerality. The Emmaline Ann Vineyard is a three acre vineyard near the town of Freestone. This vineyard has pure Goldridge sandy loam soils and Dijon clonal selections. The proximity to the ocean along with the higher elevation of this vineyard contributes to the elegant and balanced characteristics that are definitive of the Emmaline Ann Vineyard.

Winemaker Tasting Notes: 'This wine first opens up with aromas of leather and spice intermingled with raspberry, cherry and a hint of sarsaparilla. This is a bright and juicy wine that has an ethereal quality on the palate. The tannin is firm, yet integrated and is perfectly balanced with the acidity. The oak and acid play off of each other on the palate and offer a lasting finish.'

VinousWilson's 2013 Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast) is a gorgeous, deeply expressive wine loaded with class and personality. The flavors are dark, luscious and expressive, but in the classic LaRue style that favors mid-weight grace and finesse. Expressive savory notes add the closing shades of nuance. This is a serious appellation-level wine that overdelivers big time. Fruit sources are Rice-Spivak and Emmaline Ann.
