Situated in the splendid area of northern Montalcino close to Biondi Santi’s Il Greppo and the esteemed La Serena, the wines of San Filippo are ageworthy and elegant, though very approachable in their youth. The estate totals 22 hectares, 11 of which are under vine, dedicated mostly to Sangiovese, with a small olive grove as well. Founded in 1972 (1977 was the first year of production), the estate was recently purchased by Roberto Giannelli who restored and renovated the entire facility. With the help of Paolo Caciorgna, Roberto is producing 2500 cases of Brunello aged in Slavonian and Allier oak casks each year, as well as 800 cases of a delicious Rosso di Montalcino aged 6 months in used barriques and large casks.

This Riserva 2010 is made of 100% Sangiovese Grosso from 3 hectares grown in calcareous clay soils at 270-310 meters above sea level. Cold pre-maceration with the skins at 10 degrees Celsius for 3 days (during which the cap is punched down twice a day without oxygen), maceration with the skins at 28-32 degrees C for 7 days (with punching down of the cap and pumping over of the must with oxygen). Malolactic fermentation 100% in wood. The wine matures in wood (part in barriques and part in large oak casks) for 24 months. During this period the wine is racked and blended every four months. Finishing in the bottle for 8 months minimum.

Wine SpectatorThe sweet, ripe fruit has an immediate impact, offering notes of cherry, strawberry and currant, followed by light oak spice, leather, tobacco and earth accents. The tannins peek through on the finish, but overall this is balanced and long. So harmonious that you may want to enjoy now, but this should only get better with time. Best from 2017 through 2033. 175 cases made.

Wine AdvocateThe 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Le Lucére is a bold and powerful expression that is generous in terms of its aromatic delivery. The wine's appearance is dark and beautifully saturated with bright rays of ruby and garnet within. The bouquet reveals extra portions of dark fruit, plum, spice and tobacco. The oak spice is not fully integrated and the wine would benefit from three to five more years of cellar aging to see if it ever does. Given the plump and rich nature of the fruit, I don't expect this to be too much of a problem. Stylistically, this is a wood-heavy Brunello and will appeal to those who like more opulent expressions of Sangiovese. It does need more aging time however. That is for sure.

James SucklingAmazing young Brunello with superb concentration and depth. Full body, chewy yet polished tannins and mineral, oyster shell and blueberry flavors. Goes on for minutes. Leave it until 2020 to open. A triumph.
