Podere Brizio is located in Sant'Angelo in Colle, known for producing long-lived wines of great elegance and finesse. Once a part of the larger Pieve di Santa Restituta estate, Brizio was kept by Roberto Bellini when he sold the rest of Pieve to Angelo Gaja in 1996 because he felt the quality of this little parcel far exceeded the other holdings. The silver coin on the labels of the wine is known as the “Parpagliola.” Minted in 1556, it shows the she-wolf of Siena with the writing “The Republic of Siena in Monte Ilicino.” The name of the city we now know as Montalcino derives from the Italian for Mountains of the Ilex (or Holly tree). This is a symbol of a turbulent time in Tuscany’s history: After the Florentines had beaten the Sienese out of their own city in 1555, the nobles of Siena fled to Montalcino to reform their republic under the aegis of the king of France.

For the Riserva, this wine goes through a long maceration with the skins and alcoholic fermentation for approximately three weeks with temperature control. The must is pumped over twice a day. Spontaneous malolactic fermentation occurs. The wine matures in large oak casks of a capacity of 36-50 hectolitres for a minimum of 4 years. Finishing in the bottle for approximately one year. Serve with roasted meats, game, hearty pasta dishes or hard Italian cheeses.

Wine EnthusiastRipe and chewy, this savory wine opens with aromas of mature black-skinned fruit, underbrush, new leather and a whiff of exotic spice. The smooth juicy palate combines fleshy morello cherry, raspberry compote, vanilla and chopped mint while velvety tannins lend structure and finesse. A burst of orange zest lifts the finish. Drink 2018-2028.

Wine AdvocateHere's a wine with no loose ends. The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a compact and coherent expression that is elegant and powerful at the same time. The bouquet is finely stitched together and extremely smooth in texture. Wild berry, plum, cassis, tobacco and grilled herb emerge from the glass. The wine is delicately redolent of balsam notes that include dried rosemary, ginger and cola. The styling here is traditional and the Sangiovese grape is given plenty of room to shine. I look forward to tasting this estate after the 2012 vintage when the new management and winemaking team is in place.
