O'Shaughnessy Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

SKU 03174

Many of O'Shaughnessy's estate vines now exhibit close to 20 years of age on this 100 acre hillside property. Betty O'Shaughnessy Woolls and her husband Paul Woolls planted 29 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon between 1997 and 2002. They also cultivate 6 acres of blending varieties: Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Merlot, Malbec, Carmenere and St. Macaire. In pursuit of maximizing our options for flavor, they utilized several different root stocks and clones for their Cabernet plantings. Founding winemaker, Sean Capiaux, has established an impressive and notable career over the past 26 years at prominent wineries around the globe. He graduated from California State University, Fresno in the late-80's and began his career at Jordan Winery. Sean traveled to Perth, Australia to work on the winemaking team at the Houghton Winery and later returned to the United States to become the assistant winemaker at Pine Ridge Winery in the Stags Leap district. Peter Michael Winery tapped him to become their assistant winemaker where he worked for four years. Sean spent several years as a bicoastal winemaker attending to wines both on Long Island and in California before coming to O'Shaughnessy.

Made of a blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot, Malbec, Petit Verdot and St. Macaire, this Howell Mountain beauty is typically aged for 20 months in French oak. Robert Parker raves : 'O’Shaughnessy is one of my favorite under-the-radar Napa estates.'

Wine AdvocateThe 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is O'Shaughnessy's largest cuvée of wine, nearly 3,300 cases from her vineyard, with a final blend that is somewhat unusual - 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Malbec, 5% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 3% Carménère, and a rather obscure one, 3% St. Macaire. Dense purple in color, with notes of mulberry, blackberry, graphite and spring flowers, the wine has great fruit, a dense, full-bodied mouthfeel, and wonderfully sweet, well-integrated tannin. The acidity is sound, the purity impressive, and the wine long and reassuring. Drink it over the next 20+ years.

VinousDeep, inky and powerful, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is a classic wine endowed with tons of regional character and personality to burn. The inclusion of all seven Bordeaux varieties in the blend adds layers of nuance and complexity. Hints of game, smoke, licorice and dark spices add nuance to a somber, brooding Cabernet Sauvignon that is going to need at least a few years to fully open up.
