Emmolo carries on a family tradition dating back to 1923, when Jenny Wagner's great-grandfather Salvatore Emmolo immigrated from Italy to Rutherford. Jenny Wagner is the daughter of Chuck Wagner of Caymus fame. Buying property that remains in the family to this day, her grandfather built a winery and started a grapevine rootstock nursery. Managed for many years by Frank Emmolo, the nursery became the leading supplier to Napa Valley vintners. In 1994, Jenny's mother, Cheryl, launched Emmolo wines, eager to continue the family name. Today Jenny is very proud to be doing just that, with her second release of Emmolo Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot. The grapes are still grown on family property, and Jenny's grandparents, Frank and Annie, still live in Rutherford – where they sit on their porch keeping an eye on the vines.

Grapes for the 2013 vintage were sourced from the Emmolo Oak Knoll vineyard located near the city of Napa in a sub-appellation called Oak Knoll. It is ten miles nearer the San Francisco Bay than Rutherford and has a cooler microclimate. The site was strategically chosen for its soils and moderate climate, which are appropriate for growing Merlot.

"My goal for this wine was to create a well-balanced Merlot with superbly rich fruit, soft tannins and dark color. This exhibits aromas of mahogany smoke, leather and brown spice, while earthy flavors intertwine with caramelized plum and smooth tannins reminiscent of ground cocoa." Jenny Wagner, Winemaker

Wine AdvocateThis big, fat, juicy Merlot (15.1% alcohol) is luscious, pure and ripe. It has a dense ruby/purple color and is plump, not terribly complicated, but savory and fleshy. Drink it over the next 8-10 years.
