This wine is produced by Aaron Pott in the Rutherford and Oakville benches of Napa Valley. These deep fans of alluvial gravel provide optimum drainage and soil profile for top quality wines. Pott discovered a prime area on Inglewood Lane in St. Helena named Young Inglewood Vineyard, which is owned by the Young Family. The landscape slopes from the nearby Mayacamas, forming classic alluvial benchland with gravel on loam (which Pott says is similar to the terroir of Cheval Blanc in Saint Emilion). The soil type is pleasanton Loam with Gravel, and soil studies reveal well-draining, gravelly loam and deep roots beyond 9'. Planted to Cabernet Franc which benefits arm afternoons after morning fog, the vineyard has afternoon sun blocked by the Mayacamas Mountains.Farmed by Doug Hill and Scott Young whose farming philosophy Scott sums up as “regular readings of Thomas Pynchon are implemented to ensure the vines are instilled with a healthy amount of paranoia that might stress precisely the right amount to deliver beautiful fruit at harvest."

When we met Aaron Pott, his first question to us was 'What do you know about Aaron Pott?" After graduating from UC Davis and the Universite de Bourgogne in Dijon, he worked at Robert Mondavi part-time before taking the position of assistant winemaker at Newton Vineyard, under Winemaker John Kongsgaard. It was at Newton—under the wing of his first great mentor—that Pott would be introduced to Michel Rolland. At many tastings with Kongsgaard and Rolland (set up by legendary wine collector Dade Thieriot), Pott tried to convince Rolland to find him a job in France—pulling hoses around a dark cellar and working on his language skills. Rolland soon sent word that he had found the ideal position—winemaker at Château Troplong Mondot, Premier Grand Cru Classé St. Emilion. Pott would thereafter become winemaker and general manager of Château La Tour Figeac Grand Cru Classé St. Emilion.

Wine AdvocateThe 2012 Merlot/Cabernet Franc La Carte et Le Territoire comes from the Young-Inglenook Vineyard, which is composed of alluvial gravel. A blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc, it is a beautiful, dense purple-colored wine with lots of mulberry, black cherry and blackcurrant fruit, a lush, opulent, full-bodied texture, and stunning purity as well as depth. Drink this super 2012 over the next 10+ years.
