Made of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from three vineyard sites in the benchlands (foothills) of the Mayacamas Mountains, Benchland Select was first released in the 1995 vintage. The blend includes fruit from Jack and Dolores Cakebread's Hill Ranch Vineyard, and all of the grapes were hand picked and de-stemmed before crushing. The gently sloping, easterly-exposed vineyards in the Benchlands benefit from the cool afternoon shadows cast by the mountains, allowing the grapes to mature slowly and evenly. The Benchlands' gravelly loam soils also provide excellent drainage, giving the grapes great concentration. The 2011 Benchland Select is gorgeous. Lavish dark cherry, boysenberry, blackberry and blackcurrant aromas, complemented by intriguing loam, mocha and toasty oak scents, lead to smooth, round flavors on the palate, with soft tannins. Its plush boysenberry, blackberry, black fig and ripe cherry flavors take on savory earth, chocolate, mineral and toasted oak tones in the wine’s long, fruitful finish.
