Banyan Wines was created by Kenny Likitprakong and his father Somchai, who is of Thai/Chinese descent. Kenny grew up in California, riding skateboards and snowboarding for fun, but the Asian side of his family had a history in the Thai spirits industry, as well as a love for French wine. His company, Hobo Wine, has several lines of wine, including Banyan, which produces appellation-specific California white wines that pair really well with Asian cuisines, especially Thai food. The Banyan philosophy is to use only sustainably and/or organically farmed grapes from vineyards in regions with microclimates ideally suited for the particular variety.
The Gewürztraminer (guh-vurts-tra-meaner) is 94% grown at Ventana Vineyards in the Arroyo Seco AVA of Monterey and 6% grown at Mission Ranch in the same AVA. Typical for that area, wind, fog, and cool temperatures predominate year round. Both vineyards are carefully farmed to assure the specific ripeness, a balance of sugar and acidity. A long growing season and temperatures that rarely rise above 80˚F create an ideal spot for such an intensely aromatic wine. Having tried it both ways, Kenny now choose to mechanically harvest versus handpicking. The added skin contact time while in transport to the winery boosts the aromatics and savoriness of the wine. Once at the winery, grapes are pressed then cold settled for 72 hours before the fermentation is allowed to begin.
Banyan Gewurz has been referred to as 'a flirtatious peck on the cheek' which made us smile upon hearing, and the wine did just that. Its pure deliciousness is irresistible, and if you are about to enjoy Thai, Japanese or Chinese fare, you owe it to yourself to pop open a bottle of this joyful little white.
