Etienne Sauzet Puligny Montrachet les Referts 2016
The premier cru of Les Referts in Puligny-Montrachet is located next to Les Combettes vineyard, with similar soils with a higher proportion of clay than other vineyards in Puligny. Both vineyards are located close to the boundary of Meursault, in the northern part of Puligny. Open and broad, Sauzet's Les Referts is made from 35+ year old vines planted in deep clay soil interspersed with lots of gravel and aged in 33% new wood.

BurghoundRestrained and cool aromas reflect notes of matchstick, citrus and a wide range of white-fleshed fruit. The succulent and very round flavors possess excellent mid-palate density while delivering excellent length on the sappy and refreshing finish. This mildly austere effort is sufficiently rich to allow for early accessibility yet the underlying structure is clearly present to allow for up to a decade of improvement. This is quality juice.
Wine AdvocateThe 2016 Puligny-Montrachet 1e Cru Les Referts has a tightly wound, more tertiary bouquet than the Hameau de Blagny. It gradually opens and offers scents of cold steel and flint scents, distant and a bit aloof. The palate is very refined with a keen thread of acidity, nicely focused with a saline, quite precise finish that lingers in the mouth. This is another fine premier cru from Sauzet that should age with style and may end up at the top of my banded score. 90-92
