The Gouges family makes their premier cru Vaucrains from a tiny one hectare with vines averaging about 50+ years of age. Vaucrains is situated in the heart of the Nuits St. Georges appellation just south of the town of Nuits itself. It sits above Les St Georges and Les Cailles vineyards, and its hallmarks are intensity and minerality. Established in Nuits Saint Georges at the beginning of the 1900's, today it is Henri Gouge's two grandsons, Pierre and Christian, who manage the estate. Pierre tends the vineyards with sustainable practices and maintains low yields, while Christian vinifies the wines by blending traditional and modern practices. A gentle use of new oak (never exceeding 20%) keeps the wines balanced and expressive of their rich fruit character.

BurghoundThe usual impressive concentration of this wine is definitely present though as this is a big, robust and sleekly muscular wine that possess terrific structural element ripeness and culminates in an explosive and palate saturating finish. This very firm but well-balanced effort should age effortlessly for years to come and require at least 15 to arrive at is full majority. 91-94

Wine AdvocateThe 2010 Nuits St. Georges Les Vaucrains shows considerable tension and wiriness. Red cherries, iron, crushed flowers and licorice are some of the nuances that emerge from the glass in this energetic Vaucrains. This is a bit compact and tight next to some of the other wines in the lineup, but at the same time quite open relative to the house style and the year. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025.
