In 1999, after several decades of working for other vintners around the world, Jonathan and Susan Pey decided to embark on their own journey and make their own wines. Textbook is one of these such wines. Robert Parker said, 'Textbook is a serious winery that consumers should be keeping an eye on. There are real treasures in this portfolio.' Textbook is so named because after tasting it so many times in barrel it exhibited the "textbook" characteristics one looks for in a classic Oakville red wine; brooding aromas of deep red fruits, dense texture, complex flavors, and a firm, yet balanced finish. Textbook also pulls fruit from other leading growing areas in Napa including Rutherford, Carneros, Oak Knoll and Atlas Peak. All Textbook vineyards are hand pruned, hand picked and after harvest, they are hand sorted in the winery.
Typically made of 100% Napa Valley fruit, (80% Oak Knoll, 10% Rutherford, 10% Oakville District), the Textbook is a blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot. Barrels are typically 100% French, 30% new, three-year air-dried, medium-plus toast and handbent by Cadus and Francois Freres in central France. Fourteen months barrel maturation with only one racking and one organic egg white fining integrated flavors and developed its wonderfully smooth mouth-feel. It has a classic, delicious and well-mannered style.
