Planted with grape vines for over 150 years, Beckstoffer Las Piedras traces its history back to the original Mexican land grants. In the 1840's European settler, Edward Bale planted the property, a wedding gift to he and his wife from General Vallejo, to Mission grapes. It became the first vineyard planted in what is now the St. Helena appellation. The vineyard was first planted to wine grape varietals by Henry Amstutz, a colleague of Henry Pallet, one of California's first great winemakers, who established one of the first wineries in the Valley on the adjoining property in 1860. In 1983 Beckstoffer Vineyards purchased the property and planted it to two clones of Cabernet Sauvignon. Impressed with the quality of the gravelly soil, the farm workers named the vineyard Las Piedras, which means little pebbles. This is Hobbs' second release from the vineyard. Made of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and aged for 20 months in 100% new French oak barrels, this is a dense and sexy wine.

Wine AdvocateFrom one of the great sites in Oakville, the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Las Piedras Vineyard bristles on the palate with considerable energy and focus. Freshly cut flowers, red berries and crushed rocks all come to life in the glass. In 2010 Las Piedras stands out for its bright, intense salinity, which is the essential characteristic of this site. The 2010 needs at least a few years in bottle to settled down, but it is drop-dead gorgeous, even today. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2030.

Wine EnthusiastFirst you feel the velvety softness of this Cab. Then the flavors arrive, explosive in blackberries, cherries and currants, green olives, sage, cocoa and oak. Immediately the tannins close in, astringent, dry, hard. The bottom line is an extraordinary wine but one that's not drinkable now. Hold until 2018.
