This small domaine (13.75 acres) has been run by the Cathiard family for many years. Sylvain Cathiard and his wife have given the responsibility to continue the work of the estate to their enologist son, Sebastien. He is doing both the vineyard work and vinification, in a similar style to his father. The original family domaine was established by Sylvain's grandfather in the 1930s and then maintained by Sylvain's father from 1969 until 1985, when Sylvain became involved. The following year, Sylvain set up his own domaine with parcels of vines rented from his father and other vignerons, before taking on his father's original vineyards. Based in Vosne, his vineyards span Vosne-Romanee, Nuits-St.-Georges and Chambolle-Musigny, and a tiny parcel in Romanee-St.-Vivant. All of the vineyard work is done meticulously by hand by the family, and Sebastien follows a hands-off, non-interventionist approach to winemaking as his father did. The grapes are 100% de-stemmed and the premier crus see 40-75% new oak.
Cathiard's En Orveaux vines were planted in 1953 , and the family employs organic viticulture. The grapes are 100% de-stemmed, the juice spends 20-30 days in tank, indigenous yeasts perform fermentation, the wine spends 15-18 months aging (60-67% new oak) and finally the wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered.
'Do I need to tell you how much I adore Sylvain Cathiard's wines? This is a seriously good quality producer of Vosne-Romanée, one whose star is in the ascendant. These are gloriously silky smooth, complex wines; not just with the top Premier Crus but down to the generic Burgundy. It’s the intensity and focus that set Cathiard apart, wines with supreme definition and purity that seduce the palate like a beautiful courtesan. I would love to taste his Grand Crus, but they are incredibly rare and sought-after. This producer comes highly recommended from top to bottom.' Neil Martin Wine Advocate

Wine AdvocateThe 2015 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru En Orveau was the first of Sebastien Cathiard's cuvées to finish its malolactic. The nose is tightly wound with subtle oyster shell and estuarine scents infusing the dark berry fruit, only reluctantly opening (unlike the more expressive and open Aux Reignots). The palate is sorbet fresh on the entry, but linear and correct, perhaps the most conservative and "classic" of Cathiard's 2015s and surely with a propensity to age over many years. One of the most enigmatic of the domaine's 2015, undeniably it is full of class.
BurghoundAn exuberantly expressive nose exhibits lovely purity on the spicy essence of red cherry, plum, violet and again a hint of sandalwood. The sleek and silky flavors possess a remarkably seductive and refined mouth feel, all while delivering marvelous persistence. This is an exceptionally classy effort of refinement and grace. 92-94
