One of the best, most interesting professional meetings we have had all year was with Zack Ohebshalom, co-founder of Asbury Park Distilling Co. The town’s first and only distillery since Prohibition, Asbury Park Distilling Co. celebrated its 2nd anniversary in May 2019, located on Lake Ave right next to Asbury Festhalle Biergarten. Their mission is to produce the highest quality, hand-crafted spirits with pure, natural ingredients. We tasted through the entire line in both straight and cocktail form, and these spirits are very, very good, super clean and balanced. We taste a lot of spirits for our selection here, and these guys are making a top quality, delicious product with incredible passion, integrity and enthusiasm. The distillery also has top-of-the-line equipment from Germany, to distill their spirits which include vodka, gin and bourbon, and as an added bonus, their tasting room is a small, chic oasis of a bar with mixologists crafting amazing drinks with these beautiful spirits. The most delicious Gin drink we have tasted in a very long time was the Gin Gimlet at APD's chic little bar. Made with this Gin, their original and signature spirit, the Gimlet was so refreshing and clean with fresh lime juice and just a hint of honey. This Gin has 20+ hand chosen botanicals in the blend including juniper, coriander, lemongrass, orange peel, lemon peel, cardamom and more. We loved the aromas right out the gate, lovely, pure citrus dominates versus heavy juniper. Medium-bodied and ultra smooth, this is amazing for martinis and cocktails. This unique and delicious craft spirit is a 'Barrel Finished' Gin made of 100% corn mash and finished in new American oak barrels for about 4 months. The oak aging of gin such as this neutralizes the citrus notes of the original gin, and gives this spirit more spice and herb notes, as well as Single Malt-like hints of smoke and heather. Look for a light amber color with aromas of toasty oak, vanilla, honey, honeysuckle, flowers and smoke. Flavors of spices, leather, honey, pipe smoke and juniper complicate the palate which has medium body and a velvety mouthfeel. The perfect Gin for cocktails or to sip neat. This is an unfiltered straight bourbon whiskey matured a second time in Asbury Park Distilling Co.'s own oak finished gin barrels. Aged in #4 char new American oak barrels for 2 years and then 4 months in the barrels used for their barrel finished Gin, this is a highly sippable, slightly spicy, incredibly delicious bourbon.
