Meet Simone Santini An Extraordinary Organic Wine Grower From the Hills of San Gimignano & Chianti Colli Senesi
While visiting Tuscany last May, we met and positively fell in 'wine' love with Simone Santini from Le Calcinaie in San Gimignano/Chianti Colli Senesi. His organic Vernaccia whites and Chianti reds are so tasty, pure and authentically Italiano from his 30 acre vineyard. He had been recently awarded the Best Vernaccia in Decanter magazine at the time of our visit, and he was just featured in the April 30, 2019 issue of Wine Spectator with a photo and everything! Like the man himself, these wines are so joyful, pure and authentic. We have been carrying his straight up Vernaccia for quite some time and we special ordered his Vernaccia Riserva 2015 for this event/the summer. We are also awaiting the new vintage of Chianti Colli Senesi 2018 (we sold a bunch of the 2016), AND we are finally receiving his glorious 2013 Chianti Riserva which we tasted with him in person at the winery, right out of the barrel. It was so delicious and very traditional in style, exactly how we like it. Simone's wines have balance, elegance, purity, joyfulness and wonderful Italian soul, PLUS they are 100% Organic! This white is made of 100% Vernaccia grape, aged in stainless steel. It's super fresh and thirst quenching with lemon, mineral, white flower and white melon flavors. Serve with goat and sheep's milk cheeses, shellfish and lemony chicken dishes. “Tenuta le Calcinaie is a breakout winery in this report. Their Vernaccia-based wines all performed beautifully. This is a luxurious, deeply flavored example of Tuscany's great white wine : Vernaccia di San Gimignano. 'Vigna ai Sassi' Riserva is winemaker Simone Santini's award-winning Vernaccia made from his oldest vines planted in pliocene soil and clay soils filled with fossils, shells and ancient remnants of the Ligurian sea. The minerality in Simone's organic soils gives this wine great character. Aged in stainless steel, two years on the lees for extra richness and roundness, made of 90% Vernaccia and 10% Chardonnay.
Organic since 1995, grower Simone Santini is such a passionate Tuscan winemaker…Le Calcinaie is composed of 30 acres covered with vines with perfect exposure, beautifully tended, and olive trees. This Chianti has fresh, happy aromas and flavors of plums, cherries, violets, rosemary, figs and more. Serve with pesto ravioli, pasta pomodoro, artisan pizza, cured meats, meat pâté and cheeses.
With zero exaggeration, we waited an entire year before we were able to get this beautiful Chianti into the U.S.A. and we are so happy it is here now at the Bottle Shop! Before it was bottled, we tasted it out of a large traditional Tuscan barrel called a botte at the organic estate of Simone Santini, and we had to have this wine for our collection of Tuscan reds. Full of deep Sangiovese flavor and character yet fresh, balanced and pure, this 2013 Riserva will make both Chianti Classico and Brunello lovers sublimely happy. Look for dark red fruits, licorice, flowers, spices, sauvage character and wild herbs. Serve with roasted and braised meats, rich pasta dishes, hard cheeses and more.
Made of 100% Sangiovese, this estate has been organic since 1995. Grower Simone Santini is such a passionate grower … we thoroughly enjoyed our visit to his estate in San Gimignano/Colli Senesi. This is such a fun fresh wine made with NO SULFITES in the vinification, look for cherry, violet, rosemary and dried fig aromas and flavors, supple tannins and a long finish. Serve with pesto ravioli, pasta pomodoro, artisan pizza, cured meats, meat pâté and cheeses.
