MEET THIRD GENERATION
Marta Galli of Le Ragose Estate in Veneto

Marta Galli is named for her grandmother... a woman referred to as “La Signora del Vino,” and voted “Winemaker of the World” by her peers, for her influence in re-establishing Valpolicella as a classic in Italian wine and achieving DOC designation. In 1969, Marta's grandmother and grandfather Arnaldo Galli bought the historic Le Ragose estate, recognizing its excellent, high elevation vineyard sites.  They replanted the vineyard while leaving the original vines in the ancient Le Sassine vineyards and began making Amarone and Valpolicella in as natural a way as possible. Marta was also a founding member of the prestigious VIDE organization of small family-owned estates that promote excellence and typicity, as well as Le Donne del Vino, an international group for women in wine. This makes our event with her granddaughter even more special, continuing women's influence in fine wine of Italy.

At Le Ragose, local grapes Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella are blended with the indigenous varieties discovered in the ancient Le Sassine vineyard to produce Amarone, Valpolicella Classico Ripasso and Recioto della Valpolicella. The Galli family also produces an exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon made from a 30 year old high elevation vineyard, aged for two years in barrique. The estate’s vineyards are dry-farmed (no irrigation) and the steep vineyard slopes require all vineyard work to be done by hand. Le Ragose is one of only 5 growers in the whole of Valpolicella that does not buy grapes.

The most famous wine of the Veneto region is of course, Amarone, and the Galli family produces this great red in the most traditional manner. The vines are 30-60 years of age, sitting at 1200 feet elevation. Following harvest the grapes are laid out in single layers in small wooden boxes where they will slowly dry until January or February. Once dry, the raisined grapes are fermented for up to 30 days with indigenous yeasts in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks where they will stay for a period of 12 months followed by 4-5 years in large Slavonian oak casks.

Cheers! the Murray family

Le Ragose Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 2008

This is a benchmark Amarone from a small, family-run estate. Just to the north of Verona, at the highest point in the Valpolicella zone, lies the famous 30 acre Le Ragose estate, founded in 1969 by Arnaldo and Marta Galli. Their children, Paolo, Marco and Marina have now joined them to oversee every aspect of the estate, and all picking and care of the vineyards is done by hand in the steep vineyards.

Le Ragose Valpolicella Classico Superiore Ripasso 2014

bot 90

We adore this traditional producer of Amarone and Valpolicella. Located just to the north of Verona, at the highest point in the Valpolicella zone (1,148 ft), the 30 acre estate of Le Ragose was founded in 1969 by Arnaldo and Marta Galli. The family makes this Valpolicella Ripasso by passing the Valpolicella juice over the lees of the Amarone then ages it in large oak barrels for 2 years, and then in bottle for 2 more years. This is an old technique that is used by very few estates because most producers have opted for less expensive, easier methods.
