Bottle Shop of Spring Lake

We are so happy to welcome our longtime friend and colleague, Carlos Hubner-Arteta , the Presidente of VINOS LIBRES, to the Bottle Shop for this VIP Spanish Wine & Food event. Carlos had made it his mission to import honest, authentic wines from small growers in Spain into the USA, and we positively love his passionate portfolio. We will start the tasting on November 11 with a fresh, delicious CAVA sparkling wine. YA Cuvee 23 Reserva is made from 100% estate grown, sustainably farmed vines, 100% hand harvested fruit and 100% Free run juice. Then we will enjoy three reds : a beautiful Garnacha 2014 from Castilla y Leon made by a fourth generation woman winemaker named TAVERA (photo above shows their ancient vines); followed by R.O.Q. R-OH 2015, a rich, flavorful blend of Carignan and Garnacha from Montsant; and our showstopper will be LUIS ALEGRE Rioja Parcela 5 from the 2012 vintage. This red from the world renowned Rioja region is deep, velvety and intense yet balanced and elegant from a very special organic vineyard located in a protected ecosystem.

As many of you know, we also have a fresh cheese and gourmet foods department here at the Bottle Shop which we affectionately call 'The Mousetrap'. We carry the finest cheeses from France, Italy, England, Ireland, Holland, America, Canada and of course, Spain!  For years we have touted the quality of Spanish foods, citing the Spanish people's dedication to quality and authenticity. Their most famous cheese, MANCHEGO, is a hard sheep's milk, which is one of our best sellers. For this special Spanish event, we will taste our 6 month Manchego, a 3 month cow's milk Mahon, our best selling Marcona Almonds and a few other Spanish delicacies. Have you ever wondered what to do with Membrillo Quince? Or what the best way is to slice one of those yummy-looking fig cakes? Join us on November 11 and find out!!!

We will pair Spanish Wines with Spanish Cheeses & More at this VIP Event. And we would like to extend a special thanks to Vinos Libres, Frederick Wildman and Epicure Foods for participating in this tasty event!

R.O.Q. Corporation R-Oh* Montsant 2015

bot 92

This new staff pick from Catalonia is an old vine red made from dry-farmed bush vines planted in the D.O. of Montsant, in the northeast corner of Spain (not too far west of Barcelona). Montsant is technically part of the greater Priorat region, and surrounds the specific land designated as Priorat. Although geographically 'together', each of the two regions have their own individual styles due to their soils. The soil in Priorat consists of layers upon layers of slate, whereas in the Montsant, the soil types vary. There are limestone, red clay, stone, and some of the same slate that’s in the Priorat, but only in a few areas of the region. The main grapes in both areas are Garnacha, Carignane, and Garnacha Blanc. This delicious wine is from a tiny vineyard (less than one acre) planted on a steep hillside, located in Cornudella de Monstand, the highest and coolest subregion of Monstant. The soil is covered with red clay strewn with licorella (slate) and codolls (round river stones). Classic food pairings would be beef, lamb, pork, sausages and porcini mushrooms..

Bodegas Luis Alegre Rioja Parcela n.5 2012

wa 89

Founded in 1968 by Don Luis Alegre, this fine bodega is located in the Rioja Alavesa area of the Rioja region. It is a circular winery built into the side of a hill which allows gravity to move the wines with minimal pumping. The estate is known for dry farming, their use of native yeasts and sustainable farming. 90% of their production is estate grown on their 133 acres, which is rare in Rioja, the larger wineries typically need to purchase fruit from other growers.

We tasted and loved this full-bodied Rioja, made from a vineyard parcel located within the National Park Las Lagunas de Laguardia, Biotope, an organic ecosystem which is protected by the European Union. The age of the vines (40-50 years) and the saline character of the complex soils, mean that the vines produce wines with a special individuality and expression. We found rich red and black fruits, licorice, earth, stones, herbs such as sage and rosemary, olive tapenade, balsamic and smoked bacon in a rich, multi-layered, chewy, ripe style. This is a 'bad boy', in a good wa

Tavera Garnacha 2014

This wine has been crafted by four generations of women since 1917. Consuelo Gonzalez’s great grandmother Benita started the Tavera winery in that year, by making wine in ancient caves in big clay vessels. Four generations of Gonzalez-Lopez women have carried on the tradition and produce sustainably farmed, hand harvested artisanal Garnacha. We fell in love with this wine with its pretty, minty, floral bouquet and subtle, wonderful, elegant palate of red fruits, flowers and cocoa powder. It paired as beautifully with charred octopus as it did with duck breast, and will be beautiful with much more.
