Appellation Rhône
The Rhône Valley has a bevy of warm and lusty reds to choose from, and refreshing, spicy whites. The Northern area of the Rhône Valley produces reds grown on steep, granite slopes, and are made of mostly Syrah, and have big, robust, somewhat tannic personalities. Syrah has become quite well known in modern times, because of the Aussie sensation – Shiraz (yes, it’s the same grape). In the South, the climate is more Mediterranean, and the landscape is much flatter than the North. With as many as 13 different local red grape varietals, these warm, generous and friendly reds are made of mostly Grenache with Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, Carignan, Counoise, and more...we particularly enjoy the Grenache grape, which can go from elegant to lusty with luscious raspberry fruit, and bright yet feminine acidity. In its indigenous country of Spain, they call Grenache, Garnacha. Southern Rhônes tend to have lower tannin, and the most famous town is Châteauneuf-du-Pape. For pairing these wines, think of the foods of the region: free range chicken, sausages, beef, lamb, beans, olives, herbs, especially lavender, and wonderful cheeses...
