Burgundy
Home of the World's Greatest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay
Burgundy, also known as Bourgogne, and more specifically referred to as the Côte d’Or, is primarily planted to 2 grapes : Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Either the Greeks or the Romans planted the first vineyards in Burgundy, but it was not until the 10th century when the Christian monks became the cultivators of the vines, did Burgundy begin its ascendancy to fame. The specific soil or terroir or ‘place’ is very important in this region. Geologists refer to the Côte d’Or as the limestone shelf which was formed over 150 million years ago, when Burgundy was completely covered in seawater. Petrified remains of sea life were compressed with calcareous mudstone, limestone and seawater, which created the great soil, or terroir, of Burgundy, which influences the taste of the wines. Each village’s soil has different qualities derived from these elements, creating a 'sense of place.' It is most interesting and useful to get to know your villages, and the style they are known for, when attempting to 'know' Burgundy. You will be happy you did!

Domaine Comte Georges de Vogue Bonnes Mares 2002

Red BN#152012

The intense scents of the 2002 Bonnes Mares burst from the glass, exhibiting dark jammy fruits, spices, and blood oranges. Earthy, spicy black fruit scents are found in the 2003 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St.-Jacques. Highly structured and deep, this medium to full-bodied wine offers complex flavors of stony black fruits, fresh earth, blackberries, and dark cherries. Domaine Michel Magnien Morey Saint Denis Clos de la Roche 2005

Domaine Michel Magnien Morey Saint Denis Clos de la Roche 2005

One of the Magnien domaine’s two grand crus (the other Clos St. Denis, which I found marginally less impressive), their 2005 Clos de la Roche offered an unusually fat, luscious example of this cru, full of dark chocolate and liqueur-like black fruits and with amazingly sweet length, tinged by coconut, ... more

Lucien Le Moine Mazis Chambertin 2005

Lucien Le Moine Mazis Chambertin 2005

Red BN#221826

The 2005 Mazis Chambertin signals its origins with aromas of black cherry, black raspberry, and licorice. Salted meat juices and saline, chalky mineral nuances impinge on a palate of enormous concentration of blazing, bright, ripe black fruits and, improbably, citrus. The finish displays grip without grit: “palate-staining” is too weak ... more
