Burgundy
Home of the World's Greatest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay
Burgundy, also known as Bourgogne, and more specifically referred to as the Côte d’Or, is primarily planted to 2 grapes : Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Either the Greeks or the Romans planted the first vineyards in Burgundy, but it was not until the 10th century when the Christian monks became the cultivators of the vines, did Burgundy begin its ascendancy to fame. The specific soil or terroir or ‘place’ is very important in this region. Geologists refer to the Côte d’Or as the limestone shelf which was formed over 150 million years ago, when Burgundy was completely covered in seawater. Petrified remains of sea life were compressed with calcareous mudstone, limestone and seawater, which created the great soil, or terroir, of Burgundy, which influences the taste of the wines. Each village’s soil has different qualities derived from these elements, creating a 'sense of place.' It is most interesting and useful to get to know your villages, and the style they are known for, when attempting to 'know' Burgundy. You will be happy you did!
