Juslyn Vineyards
When British ex-patriots Perry and Carolyn Butler moved to California in 1982, they never dreamed they would own 42 acres of prime vineyard land in the heart of Napa Valley. They arrived in California as high-tech pioneers and founded their own computer company in the San Francisco Bay area. After routine 80-hour workweeks, the couple relaxed during weekend trips to Napa Valley, where they were bitten by the wine bug. Dreams of high-tech dominance soon turned to thoughts of returning to the land and grape growing.
Their dream became a reality when Perry and Carolyn sold their computer business and founded Juslyn Vineyards on a site overlooking the renowned Spring Mountain Winery. (The name, Juslyn, is derived from the names, Justine—the Butlers’ daughter—and Carolyn.)
From their perch on picturesque Spring Mountain, the Butlers produce only small quantities of high-end Cabernet Sauvignon. With low yielding vineyards and severe selection at harvest of only the ripest
grape clusters, the goal is to make the best wine possible in the heart of America’s finest Cabernet wine region.
Winemaking Philosophy of Two Blends
At Juslyn vineyards we understand that the finest quality wines result from a selection process that begins in the vineyard and continues through blending. Each year we select the most concentrated and age-worthy lots for the blending of the Vineyard Select. These lots contain more color and tannin and are subtler in bouquet but more powerful on the palate and we age these lots in 100% new French oak. The Vineyard Select blend is “built to last†and should continue to improve for 8 to 12 years depending on the vintage. If you like you can lay it away for future enjoyment or drink it now with a meal that matches the wine’s intensity. For the Napa Blend we select the lots that have more approachable tannins and that exhibit a more forward, in-your-face aroma profile. The Napa Blend is aged in two-thirds new French oak and is made for earlier drinking and is less in need of an intense dish to accompany it.
The fabulous, dense ruby/purple-tinged 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Spring Mountain Estate offers up scents of cedarwood, creme de cassis, graphite and fruitcake. Again, elegance combined with power, a glorious, multilayered texture and a stunning finish result in a brilliant Cabernet that should drink beautifully for 15-20+ years. more
