The beautiful landscape rounding the hill of Sant'Angelo stroke, at the end of the last Century, a shepherd that, from the Estate Franceschi in Scandicci, took is herd to winter to the Maremma. Every time, when he came back to Scandicci, he told to his owner, Lavinio Franceschi, in an enthusiastic way what he saw in this beautiful place. Lavinio, attracted by a kind of call, decided to go to that area. Once arrived, he was so amazed, that buys the Estate of Sant'Angelo from Abramo Servadio. So, the Franceschi succeeded the Tolomei and the counts Della Ciaia, the preceding owners of that Estate. With the arrival of the Franceschi, a new page was written for the agricultural history of this place. The transformation from a mediaeval agriculture to a modern one was slow and difficult. In 1958, the Commendatore Leopoldo Franceschi took from Romagna a young agricultural expert: Pierluigi Talenti; he entrusted him the Estate with trust. Together, they perceived by intuition that the principal value for the land, was the cultivation of the vine, together with the olive tree and the wheat, that have very old origin in this territory. But only with some interventions in the van, made at the begin of the 60's by the company's direction and the ownership, the local production of wine gets over the regional borders to become well-known abroad. In 1963, they created the first specialized vineyards, using special graft holders and clonal selections made by Talenti himself, choosing from the old vineyards, the Sangiovese grape with its small spread out bunches. This vineyards have been increased, and today they are 100 Hectares (about 250 acres) large, of which 48 Ha. of Brunello. After they built the new cellar, buying fermenting vats made of stainless steel or vitrified cement and oak barrels. After the death, in 1979, of Leopoldo, his sons Clemente and Roberto led the IL POGGIONE Estate. In January 1998, Dr. Roberto Franceschi died, and now his nephews Leopoldo and Livia have taken his place at the ownership. The ac tual owners, Clemente, Leopoldo and Livia, are continuing in the way of improvement, carrying on the way already drawn out, with the same attachment and love for their territory, sure that the good quality of red wines is made for the 90 % into the vineyards. The technical-oenological management is entrusted to Fabrizio Bindocci, which works for the Estate since 1976.
