Château Lascombes
Around about 1625 the Lascombes family built a single storey bourgeois house of which only a part of the Chateau's west wing remains today. It was here that Chevalier Antoine de Lascombes was born and who is now remembered through our second wine Chevalier de Lascombes. The Chateau as we see it today was built on to the existing building between 1875 & 1880 but today only the librairy remains in its original form, the rest of the Chateau having been renovated and restored over the years. The impressive wooden staircase merits particular attention as the carving represents a sheep's head that is the exact replicas that at Mouton Rothschild : no one knows which is the older. Ranked as a second cru in 1855 the Chateau was owned at the end of that century by the noble Chaix d'Est-Ange who rose to fame under Napoleon III by wining the Suez Canal case for France against Egypt After a succession of owners and contributed little to its reputation Lascombes came under the ownership of Alexis Lichine during the early 1950's and it was through his initiatives that Lascombes started to make a revival. In 1971 the current owners, BASS, bought Chateau Lascombes and continue to work today to improve the quality, reputation of this magnificent property. Visit the Château Lascombes website.
