Château Climens
With wines of unusual complexity and extraordinary longevity, the reputation of Château Climens transcends the boundaries of time and space. Classically elegant, the 18th century chartreuse-style château, flanked by two ground level square towers along with the garden and cellars, is devoid of frilly architectural details : it is entirely dedicated to the patient art of winemaking.
The Climens terroir is incomparable. Situated on the highest point of the Barsac appellation, it stretches out for 30 hectares around the château in a single continuous vineyard. The red soil, dotted with stones is made up of a thin layer of clayey, ferruginous sand on a substrata of fissured starfish limestone.
The combination of these soils and the slope lend to excellent natural drainage. With the micro-climate in Sauternes and the exceptional terroir, the grapes are subject to an early development of noble rot, or Botrytis Cinerea. Aided by specific weather conditions of alternating mist and sun, this microscopic mushroom develops on ripe grapes, inducing the concentration and structure modification necessary for the elaboration of great sweet wines. Château Climens with its 100% Semillon, is one of the rare single variety growths of the region and it shows fabulous expression of Semillon here.
There is perfect harmony between this very demanding varietal and this terroir, both of which are conducive to the development of noble rot. From this unique alchemy is born the inimitable balance, smoothness and incomparable finesse of the wines from Climens.
