Bernardus Marinus 2002
 |
|
BN#194581 |
Made of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot and 1% Malbec, this California Meritage has held a long reputation for a regal, yet still reasonably priced red. Aged for 16 months in small French oak barrels, this wine has the spirit of a good Bordeaux, but made in California. Look for a rich, complex nose of black cherry, plum and cedar box. The wine is full bodied and fleshy in the mouth, with good depth, and a long, lightly tannic finish, tasting of black currant, toasty new oak, cherry, and tobacco. We think this 2002 may be the best Marinus yet.
Wine Enthusiast
Very similar to the ’01, maybe a bit more tannic, this polished blend of all five Bordeaux varieties is firm in acids and tannins. The flavors are ripe and forward, of cassis, dark chocolate and tobacco. Might develop with four or five years of bottle age.
Score: 90.
