Viña Cobos U Nico Marchiori Vineyard 2005
This is a new project for 'flying winemaker' Paul Hobbs - Vina Cobos. Hobbs began his intense interest in Argentina and its vineyards when in 1988, he visited Argentina for the first time. He was a young California winemaker at the time, and had been invited by José Catena, whom he had met at UC Davis. Today Hobbs is more involved in Argentina than ever while still maintaining his winemaking in California.
Wine Advocate
There is one blended wine in the portfolio called u Nico. The 2005 u Nico is the first vintage of this wine which is to be produced only in top vintages (there will be no 2007). It is composed of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon and 37% Malbec. It spent 20 months in 100% new Taransaud French oak, was fermented with native yeasts, and was bottled unfined and unfiltered. A saturated purple/black in color, it offers complex notes of pain grille, spice box, leather, tobacco, black currant, and black cherry. Thick and sweet on the palate, flavors of cassis, blackberry, herbs, and mineral emerge followed by a pure, 60-second finish. Give it 5-7 years to evolve in the bottle and drink it through 2030.
Score: 98.

Wine Spectator
Very well-endowed with dark licorice and warm ganache aromas, followed by a very rich palate of espresso, currant paste, warm fig bread and freshly crushed blackberry. The long finish is dense but very creamy in texture. An impressive version of the modern style. Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2009 through 2014.
Score: 93.
