Producer Uccelliera

The Uccelliera estate located in the Montalcino zone, was originally part of the well-known Ciacci Piccolomini estate until 1986. Today, proprietor Andrea Cortonesi conducts all work in the vineyard by hand. We visited the estate in early October of 2009 and spent some time with Andrea. He was juggling our visit with the tasks of harvest, including gently taking grape bunches off the truck and sending them into his small crusher by his own hand. The Rosso is limited in production, featuring a powerful nose, and lush, soft fruit, while the Brunello features complex aromas of exotic spice and dark red fruits with an expansive palate and velvety texture. His wines certainly match his personality: a big, larger-than-life type of man who warm, friendly and easy to laugh, he obviously enjoys life and is very passionate about wine. His wines wind up exuding big, rich, complex flavors with the rustic yet noble nature of Montalcino. This wine was chosen as a Top 100 Wine of the Year in the Wine Spectator for the previous vintage 2004.

'Proprietor Andrea Cortonesi fashions big, full-bodied wines from his vineyards in the southern part of the zone. This is a very strong set of releases from a producer who represents the finest of the artisan approach to making wines in Montalcino.' -- The Wine Advocate, May 2, 2008

Wine Advocate The 2005 Brunello di Montalcino is one of the unqualified successes of the vintage. Dark, vibrant fruit melds into graphite, spices, menthol and minerals as this mid-weight, elegant Brunello opens up in the glass. Deceptively medium in body, the 2005 Brunello packs quite a punch, with tons of super-ripe fruit that caresses the palate and balances the tannins beautifully through to the close. The warm radiance of Castelnuovo comes through in spades. This is another brilliant Brunello that benefits from the inclusion of fruit that usually goes into the Riserva. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2022. Score: 94. —Antonio Galloni, April 28, 2010.

Wine Spectator Very pretty aromas of mulberry and flowers lead to a full body, with toasty oak, coffee and dark fruits on the palate, followed by a chewy tannic finish. Still tight and holding back. Best after 2012. Score: 92. —James Suckling, 2010.
