Producer Tenuta San Guido

The 2000 vintage was the first vintage release of Guidalberto. It was a wine created by the producer of Sassicaia, Nicoló Incisa della Rocchetta, and his winemaker/stepson Sebastiano Rosa. They planted new vineyards dedicated exclusively to the production of Guidalberto. Named after Guidalberto della Gherardesca, a maternal ancestor of Incisa who cultivated vines in Bolgheri in the 19th century, the wine is conceived differently from Sassicaia but shaped by the same soil and climate. Made of a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese, this rich, focused wine has ripe, concentrated berries, spice, vanilla and cedar in the nose leading to more of the same in the mouth. The palate is elegant with a supple texture and silky tannins on the long finish. Oak aging of this wine takes place over 12 months in 225 liter French and American oak barrels, 30% of which are new and 70% of which are from prior vintages' used for Sassicaia. The wine is released two years after the harvest and is 'made to drink while you wait for your Sassicaia' says Sebastiano Rosa.

'Tenuta San Guido is on a roll these days. Over the last few years, the estate has released a number of hugely delicious wines. These new releases are nicely aligned with their respective vintages. The entry-level Le Difese and Guidalberto both capture the essence of a sunny year that made wines well suited to near-term drinking, while the 2008 Sassicaia captures the potential of a powerful vintage characterized by low yields and a late harvest.' Wine Advocate

Wine Advocate The 2009 Guidalberto flows across the palate with layers of radiant red fruit. This is another striking, supple Guidalberto loaded with personality. Stylistically it is quite close to the 2007, but with perhaps a touch less body but equally silky, polished tannins. Freshly cut roses, spices and a burst of pure red berries add nuance on the finish. Guidalberto is no longer the stunning value it once was, but it is quite gorgeous in this vintage just the same. This is easily one of the best vintages I can recall tasting. Guidalberto is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019. 92+ Score: 92. —Antonio Galloni,
