In 1972, Silver Oak’s Alexander Valley vineyards produced the harvest that would become their first Cabernet Sauvignon. Seven years later, they harvested the grapes for their first Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, which is now produced as a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux varietals. This 2005 offering is made of over 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot in the blend. It is a complex and elegant wine that balances fruit and savory elements with finesse and oak. Look for aromas of black plum, soy sauce, chocolate, rose petals, cedar and black olives. It has a soft, velvety attack and a fruity, floral and spicy mid-palate. The finish is long and smooth with well integrated tannins.
International Wine Cellar
Good deep red-ruby. Musky aromas of cassis, licorice, game, tobacco leaf and subtle brown spices. Velvety-sweet and deep, with hints of tobacco leaf, mint and herbs giving definition to the middle palate. Nicely bright but youthfully tight wine, finishing with broad tannins. Carrying a moderate 13.5% alcohol. Still tight, but then this won't be released until next winter. Incidentally, following Silver Oak's purchase of a vineyard in Soda Canyon in 1999, this wine now relies less on contract fruit. Score: 91+.
