René Rostaing, the nephew of the legendary Marius Gantaz-Dervieux in Côte-Rôtie, is one of the great, reference point producers of the Rhone Valley. This 100% Syrah is a blend of vineyards from throughout the appellation. The vineyards yield an average of 35 hectoliters per hectare; average case production is 1,500 cases.
Wine Advocate
The 2006 Cote Rotie Classique reveals aromas and flavors of cassis, cherries, incense, bacon fat, licorice, and olives. It is a soft, luscious, elegant red to drink over the next 7-8 years.

International Wine Cellar
A highly aromatic bouquet of black raspberry, licorice, smoky Indian spices and dark chocolate. Chewy and deep in dark fruit flavor but possesses impressive energy, with a zesty kick of minerals on the back end. Finishes spicy and long, repeating the licorice note. Rostaing told me that about 20% of this blend comes from the prime La Vialliere vineyard.
Score: 90.

Wine Spectator
Superfresh, with a great iron streak running through the silky violet, plum and red currant notes. The long, finely tuned finish has just a kiss of toast and leaves a mouthwatering impression. Drink now through 2018.
Score: 90.
