At Potel-Aviron, winemaker Stéphane Aviron has adopted an almost radical return to tradition; sustainable and organic viticulture, extremely old vines and classic Burgundian techniques. His cru Beaujolais express the terroir and complexities of varying sites and all of the vines used to produce his wines are at least 40 years old. When we tasted through his 2009 offerings, we were blown away by the richness, suppleness and authenticity of the range. Knowing Stéphane for over a decade now, and loving his wines all along the way, we were thrilled that in 2009 his wines are downright magical.
This cru is from the village of Morgon, and more specifically from an 1150-foot peak (the remains of a volcano) named Mont du Py. It is widely considered one of Morgon's best terroirs, if not the best. Our notes read, "This is excellent. So rich and big yet suave and supple. Black fruits and licorice abound. Great balance. Lots of tannin indicate a long life. The best Cote de Py ever tasted."
Wine Advocate
The sumptuously-textured Potel-Aviron 2009 Morgon Cote du Py Vieilles Vignes is surprisingly understated but ultimately quite convincing, and almost certainly worth pursuing for another 3-5 years. Salted plum and its pit; elderberry; beef marrow; bay laurel; crushed stone; and bittersweet inner-mouth perfume of iris and gentian combine for a complex, savory, and intriguingly as well as mouthwateringly lingering finish. This sensational value is a great example of what’s possible from this unique, basaltic sector of the Morgon appellation as well as from the superb 2009 vintage.
