Paringa is owned by the Hickinbotham family whose association with the Australian wine industry dates back to 1936, when Alan Robb Hickinbotham, co-founded Australia’s first Oenology School in South Australia. Today he works with his grandson David Hickinbotham to produce one of the country’s best values. Over 1,000 acres of vines make up the Paringa Vineyard located in South Australia’s ‘fruit bowl country’ – The Riverland. The vineyard abuts Australia’s longest river, the Murray River, and has excellent well draining sandy loam topsoil sitting atop ancient limestone. Rainfall is very low but Paringa has a constant and reliable source of water for its computer control drip irrigation system from the Murray River. The word Paringa is the anglicized indigenous term for ‘bodies of water’. Look for intense blackberry, black currants, cinnamon, nutmeg spices, and hints of mocha oak on the nose. The palate conveys the dark berry fruits of the nose with delicate sweetness, gentle acidity and soft, fine tannins. Perfect for serving on its own for folks who prefer to drink wine without food.

The 2009 Shiraz has a very deep garnet-purple color and intensely spicy, warm blackberry nose with a hint of lavender. Full, crisp and ripe, it has a moderate level of chunky tannins and some vanilla jutting out in the finish. Drink it now through 2013.
