Made by Michael Mondavi, this classic Napa Cab is a blend of Rutherford, Oakville, Stags Leap, Atlas Peak and Wooden Valley fruit, which allows the winery to take advantage of both the volcanic hillside soils and the deeper alluvial soils of the valley floor. The fruit is hand harvested, and the winemaker uses extended juice to skin contact to marry rich flavor with good structure. Malolactic fermentation, in barrel, combined with 18 months aging in French oak barrels further concentrates the flavors and adds nuances of vanilla and toffee. Made of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 3% Syrah, 1% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. look for black cherry, dark plum, cassis and sweet mocha flavors in a sleek, mouth-filling style. Formerly only available in restaurants, this is an incredible value.
In his blog, Eric Asimov of the New York Times recommends Oberon Cabernet Sauvignon, identifying it as 'one of a dozen American treasures, great wines under $20.'
James Suckling
