Laura Catena, daughter of Argentine wine pioneer Nicolás Catena, has made a commitment to produce small quantity, artisan quality, and terroir-driven wines under her Luca label. She starts with some of Argentina’s best fruit from low-yield, high elevation vineyards. State-of-the-art winemaking and oak aging (primarily French) elevate the wines to a quality level demanded by true wine connoisseurs. Luca is named after Laura Catena’s son. We tasted and loved this Malbec with its dense yet balanced style and ripe black fruits, licorice and sweet earth abounding with a snap of acidity on the finish. Very classy wine here from Argentina.
Wine Advocate
The 2009 Malbec spent 16 months in 60% new French oak. It displays a fragrant perfume of lavender, wood smoke, spice box, black cherry, and blackberry leading to a smooth-textured, succulent, easygoing Malbec with a bit of hidden structure and a lengthy, fruit-filled finish. Although it is likely to evolve for 1-2 years, it can be approached now and over the next 10 years.
