L’Oca Ciuca is made by ‘flying winemaker’ Alberto Antonini. The Tuscan-born Antonini worked at Frescobaldi and then as chief winemaker for Antinori, producing world-class wines such as Tignanello and Solaia. After that he went on to do postgraduate research at the University of Bordeaux and UC Davis in California. During his time in California he worked with Robert Mondavi and Jim Clendenen at Au Bon Climat, and combined his Old World experience with New World ones. The result is a winemaking style that favors ripe, round fruit that still captures the essence of the place where the wine is from. Today, Antonini has his own estate called Poggiotondo in Tuscany, and Greenstone Vineyards in Australia, and he has about a dozen international clients including L'Oca Ciuca.
The L’Oca Ciuca Brunello 2006 is made of 100% Sangiovese Grosso, all of the grapes are hand harvested and the wine is aged for two years in French barrels, followed by two years in bottle. Plum, cherry, blackberry and anise scents lead to more plums, blackberries and earth notes with plenty of tannin for aging.
Wine Spectator
Sweet cherry and plum flavors are offset by licorice, spice and a hint of tar in this structured red. This is dense, showing some grain to the muscular tannins, ending with a long, spice-filled aftertaste. Best from 2013 through 2026.
