This small, quality-driven domaine in the Rhone Valley is well-known in Europe for its delicious, terroir-driven wines. Guy Bernard was the 3rd generation Bernard to run the estate and now his sons, Frederic and Stephane, have taken over since 2000. They are considered to be among the rising stars of Cote Rotie. Their vineyards are mainly on the southern Cote Blonde sector of the appellation and consequently the wines are generous and friendly upon release with a serious structure underneath for aging. Condrieu is made of 100% Viognier, and is considered the benchmark example of this varietal; this is from the Bassenon vineyard and is a terrific buy in the appellation. Look for aromas of violets, white flowers, peaches and vanilla, followed by more of the same in the mouth. Serve with lobster, scallops or any white fish, especially with a creamy sauce.
